Tina Duthil, Surface Pattern Designer

Pattern design inspiration for your fabric and stationery collection

Bonjour!

I'm Tina, a soul enchanted by life's vibrant tapestry - from the lush gardens of my grandfather in tropical Mauritius to the inspiring flora of home away from home - Aotearoa, New Zealand.

My journey as an artist is a dance of colours, textures, and memories, woven together like the intricate corals off Mauritian shores.

As a child, I was mesmerised by my mother's bold, patterned clothes. This early fascination planted a seed that lay dormant for years, only to bloom unexpectedly in adulthood. The end of a long-term relationship sparked the rediscovery of my passion and curiosity for life, in all its beautiful shapes and colours. As Rupi Kaur eloquently put it, "Losing you was the becoming of myself."

My artistic rebirth began with Zentangle drawings and a personal challenge: to sketch one oracle card daily during a transformative kirtan retreat with Krishna Das in Costa Rica. This experience illuminated the profound connection between dancing, kirtan, and designing in my life - each practice anchoring me in the present and igniting a spark of joy that makes my soul smile and swirl with the universe.

Serendipity led me to a surface pattern design course in 2023, marking the true beginning of this exhilarating adventure. Now, I create whimsical designs that swirl and twirl like a dervish's dance, inspired by nature's beauty and life's rhythms.

Hafiz once said, "We are exquisitely woven with the finest silk and wool, and that pattern upon our soul has the signature of God." In this spirit, I craft each design hoping to inspire you to dance with life, to find your own rhythm, and to see the world through a lens of wonder and creativity.
